FORT RICKEY CHILDREN'S DISCOVERY ZOO JUNE 23, 2007
by Kelly Sometimes we visit a place thinking it has absurd potential only to find out we're wrong. Or it's absurd in a completely different way than we thought. The Fort Rickey Children's Discovery Zoo turned out to be a beautiful destination for a sunny Saturday in June. And it was absurd only in the sense that the animals are absurdly friendly with the general public - which is a wonderful thing! Here is a map of the beautiful park:
As soon as we walked in, we ventured over to a grimy looking pool that looked to be empty at first glance. The very second we approached the fence we found we were not alone when these two adorable otters scampered over and stared up at us. By the time I got out the camera, they were having all kinds of crazy fun. I did manage to snap a few pics, though:
Moving away from the otters, we decided not to try the petting zoo. A miniature horse had already tried to snack on my shirt. We weren't up for being soiled on.
The deer here at Fort Rickey are exceptional. I found a real friend in this guy...
... while Ham chatted with this little lady...
We were surprised to find the bison behind two simple fences. They seemed docile enough, though. A sign said they eat mostly grass. I guess as long as you don't go sticking your arm through the fence and taunting them you'd be ok...
The best part of the day, by far, was visiting the Maternity Ward, which they let the patrons do a few times a day. The Maternity Ward consists of mothers, fathers, and baby goats. The public is let in so children may chase the babies, carry them around and generally pal around with them. The goats seem to love the attention. This guy was particularly wild...
...ok, I don't know if that one was the exact one. But you can see the baby goats having the time of their lives in this short video I took in the Maternity Ward:
We heard some of the children laughing hysterically and found this goat displaying some funny teeth: This little darling was another of the parents in the Maternity Ward:
As was this guy - sporting a wonderful goatee and exceptional modeling skills:
Tearing ourselves away from the cuteness, we found this peafowl was on the fence about something:
The peacocks were utterly obnoxious, making one of the most annoying noises my ears have ever heard almost the entire time we were at the zoo. A sheep:
Two bunnies and a rather annoyed pig:
Near the end of our visit, we saw this play area and Ham was quite taken with it. I had to hold him back, telling him he's much too large to be cavorting on such things:
All-in-all we had a very pleasant time at Fort Rickey. It's clean and well-kept. The animals seem happier than at any other zoo I have ever seen. I would highly recommend this zoo to anyone. Even if the animals are absurdly friendly! Nothing wrong with that! (Posted 06/24/2007) GO TO PROJECT ABSURD HOME PAGE
